Does Europe Exist?

There has been a great deal of spoken and written words spent on the European Union, which seeks to create a European State, but as far as I can see no one has really thought about what Europe really is, and more importantly does it exist at all? There is geography, history, culture and economics to consider. Continue reading

Freedom Matters

“Freedom is always, and exclusively, freedom for the one who thinks differently”, as one political thinker noted. That thinker also said “Without general elections, without unrestricted freedom of press and assembly, without a free struggle of opinion, life dies out in every public institution, becomes a mere semblance of life, in which only the bureaucracy remains as the active element.”

The War of Ideas

Ideas fight each other. The battles go on for centuries. The warriors are ordinary people led by a whole ranking of politicians, economists, religious leaders all pushing ideas they have obtained and often misinterpreted from prophets, philosophers and thinkers. Where one idea conflicts with another humans usually end up killing each other over the conflict.  Continue reading

Radicalisation, Extremism and Propaganda

Schools, colleges and universities are now supposed to have policies in place to prevent “radicalisation” of students and prevent students from being subjected to extremist ideas. It is an unfortunate use of language. A radical is simply someone who believes something that is not  a generally held belief. An extremist is someone who simply wants to take his or her belief to the ultimate logical step.  Continue reading

Using Tags

People use convenient tags to communicate complicated concepts which save them the bother of communicating with many words because they can simply use one word. It also saves them the bother of thinking through what they want to communicate and gives them an opportunity to pretend that what they claim is better than it really is. Tags that are commonly used to express complicated concepts include diversity, immigration, racism, feminism, transparency, proportionality, sustainability, discrimination, openness – in fact you can get a list of the most popular tags by listening to any speech made by a politician. Words Come in a Rush but Words are not Ideas

Sometimes I do not have to time to write an essay which I find satisfactory. We cannot buy or extend time, either in microcosm or in our lifetimes. Sometimes the ideas are ill formulated in my mind because I have spent insufficient time thinking about the ideas. Sometimes the words flow, but the ideas are not significant.   Continue reading

I an anxious not to write nonsense

I have written many essays since I started this blog, almost five years ago. I am anxious not to write nonsense and it is likely that some of what I have written is nonsense. I have written an essay almost every day; the power of the internet is such that probably more than a million glimpses of my writing have been made by hundreds of thousands of people.

Most blogs are observations. I do not want to write about what I have done so I write about what I think, in the hope that it may stimulate others to think in ways that they may not have thought to think. I continue to hope that I shall not write too much nonsense.

The Overwhelming Problem

We accept that energy in a closed system cannot be created or destroyed; it simply transforms from one kind of energy in one place to another kind of energy in another place. We accept that mass in a closed system cannot be created or destroyed. Mass and energy bear a special relationship. To each other and that matter may be converted to energy provided the energy retains the same mass.

These are clues, not solutions to the overwhelming problem.

We do not know if our thoughts ideas and feelings have energy or mass; our measuring devices are too crude. When ideas are running at speed through the brain, does it give the brain more mass? The brain certainly requires more energy to enable those thoughts to run through a mind. Where do our forgotten memories go to hide? Where do the memories of the dead reside? Memories and ideas transform into the words and actions that we have created and passed, by conduction or radiation as an inevitable inheritance to those around us that come into contact with us.

But when we die, where do our feelings go?

Climate Change from idea to perception to almost truth

This is the third attempt that I have made to write an essay for today. At one time the previous two attempts would have reached the waste paper bin, but these days failed attempts are simply cremated before they are born. Continue reading
