Referendum Sophistry

Parliament cannot decide what to do about Brexit. The people have already decided but Parliament will not implement the decision of the people. Some scream “another vote, a people’s vote, that is democracy”.

If there has to be another vote then there should be just two questions:

1. Does the UK exit the EU without a deal on WTP rules or

2. Does the UK exit the EU on the basis of the deal negotiated by the Government.

That would be democracy stepping in to make good the incompetence of the politicians.

There is no basis for including any other question in any new referendum and no legal, moral or logical basis for asking whether the UK should stay in the EU.

In a parliamentary democracy a referendum is the last refuge of the dishonest.

One Response

  1. Well said but are the politicians just incompetent? I suggest dishonest is more appropriate.
