Being Force Fed to Death

Mr Tariq Ba Odah has been in prison in Guantanamo since 2002, more than 13 years. He has been on hunger strike since 2007 in protest to his detention without trial. He has been force fed since then, but the process of force feeding him has now rendered his body unable to absorb the food that he needs to live.

He has committed no crime, for if he had done so he would have surely been charged and convicted by now. In fact in 2009 President Obama cleared Mr Ba Odah for release, but the authorities have refused to release him, preferring to force fed him to death rather than admit that he should never have been imprisoned without trial.

He now weighs about half of what he should weigh and all attempts to secure his release are being opposed. He will, of course, get release when he dies.

It is unsurprising that cases like that of Mr Ba Odah strength the recruitment of terrorists who see their terrorism as a proper response to such injustices.
