There have been what seems to be an increasing number of incidents where police behave in their dealings with ordinary citizens in ways that are bullying, violent and inappropriate. There seems to be many such incidents in the Southern parts of the USA where police have, as far as I can tell from police webcam videos installed in their cars, behave with undue aggression. The latest incident led to the death of Sandra Bland in a police jail after Miss Bland was stopped for failing to signal – a simple matter which she readily admitted and would have been give a ticket, but the officer who stopped her seemed to feel entitled to order her about, including ordering her to stop smoking in her own car.
This trend towards increasing aggression by police officers is also apparent in the United Kingdom, but not as bad as it appears to be in some parts of the USA.
If you give a man power it is likely he will abuse it. If you show servility to a man in power you will likely escape serious harm but if you argue with a man in power and protest about his inappropriate treatment of you then you will feel the full force of his power and in some parts of the world it will cost you your life. In other parts of the world, including in the United Kingdom, it may merely cost you liberty and your savings.
It was ever thus:
but man, proud man,
Dress’d in a little brief authority,
Most ignorant of what he’s most assur’d—
His glassy essence—like an angry ape
Plays such fantastic tricks before high heaven
As makes the angels weep;
