Turkeys do vote for Christmas

There is something very odd about those who manufacture genetically modified food. Such corporations include Monsanto, Pepsi and Nestle. They do not appear to be proud of what they do, rather they seem to want to keep the fact that the food and beverages they make contain genetically altered food a dark secret.

In the State of Washington environmentalists proposed a law (Initiative 522), that would have obliged companies that produce genetically modified food to label their products as containing genetically modified food. The way things seem to work on America is that those proposed the initiative and those opposing the initiative raise huge sums of money to advertise their points of view. In the event, the corporations that want to keep the fact that they genetically modify food a top secret raised $22 million, whereas the environmentalists raised a paltry $8 million. The voters, perhaps sheep like, responded to the big advertising and the initiative failed to become law.

A similar initiative in California was defeated last year. In California the GM corporations spent $45 million in successfully opposing an simple proposition namely, “the fundamental right of the people of California to be fully informed about whether the food they purchase and eat is genetically engineered and not misbranded as natural”.

Christmas is coming and it seems that in some parts of the world, turkeys do vote for Christmas.
