The Purpose of War

The purpose of war should be to protect a nation, not to advance its interests by conquest. Indeed, conquest usually works out badly for the conquerors in the long run as the conquered almost always assert themselves over the conquerors.

Modern inventions have given nations an alternative to war so that a nation may threaten “action” (which usually means bombing) without incurring the risks of war, be they short term risks of the war being unsuccessful or the long term risks of the conqueror being conquered.
