The Days are Getting Longer

Thank goodness the days are getting longer. The dark nights of winter will soon be over, as England slowly but surely increases its daylight, minute by minute, every day. I wake up in the dark and travel home in the dark, but there is light on the horizon. Not the light of reflections from the snow that has covered much of the country recently. But the light that comes from the fact that now the sun rises in London before 7.30 am and does not set until after 5pm, as opposed to those December days when it rose after eight and set before four.

Notwithstanding the cold snap, I have seen the shoots and bunds in the ground and on the trees as the season prepares to shake off the winter drowsiness and grow young and strong.   February was named for purification. Fond hope these days, but nevertheless hope.
