Goodbye Severn Barrage

I was pleased to learn that the UK government had cancelled plans for the state to finance the proposal to build an electricity generating barrage across the Severn Estuary from Somerset to Glamorgan. I wrote about these proposals two and half years ago, and at that stage thought the plan was foolish. I did not reach my conclusions because the local wildlife and ecosystems would be damaged, in some cases irretrievably. That is important but not decisive to my mind. I reached the view that the project would take too long, was too uncertain and that there were better ways of generating clean and renewable energy. Continue reading
