It looks as though we will need to create many jobs in the United Kingdom very quickly. Our banks have collapsed needing large dollops of taxpayers’ money to keep the people running the banks in the styles to which they are accustomed, but many ordinary jobs in banking will go. Recession will also mean redundancies in retail, possibly holidays, and many in the building trade as house builders have to regroup, being unable to break even on many of their projects. The immediate outlook is bleak, not horrendously so, but every unemployed person who looks for and cannot find work is someone in distress, someone living in the deep midwinter.
