When you are far away from mountains they look easy to climb. You cannot see the hazards in detail. You can easily be over confident of your journey and over confident of a successful conclusion to your journey. As you get nearer the mountains so they look higher and harder. When you have reached them you cannot see the peaks because of the slopes that are close to you. These hide the peaks but you know the peaks are there, all right.
It can be hard to understand our place on this earth. We want to climb mountains but often the journey to the mountain’s foot is impossible. Even if we reach the start of the climb we can but wonder in awe at the problems of climbing to the top. We cannot imagine the problems of climbing down again, whether we come back the way we came or find some other route to climb down.
It is late summer where I live. As I write these words the sun has begun to shine. It brings energy, good feelings and even vitamins. I still see the mountains ahead and the sun has reached this position many times in my lifetime, each time making me older and more wondrous of the journey.
